BARISTA TRAINING

Great coffee is never an accident. It’s the result of skill, consistency, and the decisions made behind the machine every day.

As a barista, your role directly shapes the quality, speed, and experience your customers receive — from flavour and texture to service flow and presentation. When those skills are refined, the impact extends beyond the cup, strengthening the entire café operation.

At Crema, barista training is about building real-world capability. We focus on practical skills, equipment knowledge, and service efficiency to support baristas and café teams in delivering consistently great coffee.

TRAINING AVAILABILITY

Crema has chosen to focus our training resources on supporting our existing commercial partners.

For the time being, barista training is offered exclusively to Crema wholesale clients and customers who purchase coffee equipment through us.

This approach allows us to deliver practical, café-specific training aligned with quality service, equipment, and coffee programs.

Accredited Barista Training

Looking to do an Accredited course? You now need to have a USI. Find out more about the USI and how to get one here

What makes Crema better?

Unlike a lot of barista courses, we provide you with a small classroom size of only 5 students and each student has their own group head and steam wand. The small class size and exclusive use of equipment mean that each student obtains individual attention and instruction from our certified trainer, so there is plenty of opportunities to make beverages many times over. We don't rush you through either - all students will have ample time to learn and understand everything. As we are also a local roaster, you will get to see how the roasting of coffee is carried out, giving students a greater overall understanding of coffee.

The Difference Between Accredited and Non-Accredited Training

Accredited Training is training which provides a person with a nationally recognised qualification on completion. It is sometimes referred to as Nationally Recognised Training and has been developed based on the National Training Package for the given industry or where a Training Package does not exist and a course has been accredited for national recognition.

What is the difference between an accredited (nationally recognised) course and a non-accredited course?

By undertaking a nationally recognised course, participants learn in accordance with nationally agreed industry standards. On successful completion of the course, participants receive a qualification (or statement of attainment if doing part of the course).

The qualification is recognised in every state of Australia (and New Zealand).

Participants are required to complete an assessment for all nationally recognised courses.

Non-accredited courses do not carry national recognition, however, they carry several advantages if gaining a qualification is not a key reason for the training. The course can be built around a client’s specific training needs and there is no assessment requirement.

Which class should I attend?

Are you looking to work in a café? A fully accredited class is the one you want. This class will give you two nationally recognised certificates:

  • SITXFSA001 Use hygienic practices for food safety
  • SITHFAB005 Prepare and serve espresso coffee

Have you already completed the safe food handling training?

Use hygienic practices for food safety (SITXFSA001) is a pre-requisite for the Prepare and Serve espresso coffee unit. If you have successfully completed this unit through other training at school or TAFE and can provide a copy of the original certificate or transcript, you may not have to complete those modules a second time.

What does “Accredited Training” mean?

Do I have to have a certificate to work in a cafe?

It is not a legal requirement to have a certificate to work as a barista, but completing an Accredited Class gives you essential training and skills to make you job ready.

I’ve been working as a barista for years but I don’t have the piece of paper?

If you have the practical experience of working in a café preparing food and beverages but don’t have the Certificate, we are able to offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This is an assessment process that uses evidence of your previous non-certificated achievements to demonstrate competence or achievement within a unit or qualification. Contact our trainer to arrange this assessment.
