Cáscara Coffee Cherry Tisane (Tea) 200g is the dried fruit of the coffee cherry that surrounds the seeds known as coffee beans. It can be brewed using hot or cold water, just like other teas, producing a delicate and sweet fruity drink.

The caffeine content of Cáscara has been reported to be significantly lower than coffee or tea, with 50mg of caffeine present in a 300ml serving of cascara tea. Comparatively, 40mls of espresso can contain up to 168mg of caffeine.

Cáscara has also been found to contain high levels of flavanols, a type of antioxidant or polyphenols (a specific group of bioactives, or plant-derived nutrients, within the larger family of natural compounds known as flavonoids.). Flavonoids (a class of plant and fungus secondary metabolites) are considered a highly effective ‘super-antioxidant’, with just one serving of cascara offering 25mg per 100ml.

Comparatively, a cup of green tea contains around 173mg of flavanols and a cup of filter coffee has a little more than 408mg. Unlike another antioxidant rich superfood – cocoa – Cáscara  has almost no fat, cholesterol, protein, sugar, sodium or carbohydrates, and few calories. For example, in one 150ml cup of Cáscara there is just 42kJ/10 calories, 2g of carbohydrates, less than 1g of fibre, and approximately 37.5mg of caffeine; however, it’s packed with lots of beneficial polyphenol antioxidants like phytonutrients. Flavonoids assist the body with optimal blood flow, anti-aging, inflammation and metabolism; as well as reducing the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma and stroke. New studies are showing promising results that they help protect our brain in a myriad of ways, however understanding the benefits of flavonoids is still ongoing.


Cáscara Coffee Cherry Tisane (Tea) 200g Suggested Hot Recipe:

-Place 10g of Cáscara in a plunger or teapot.

-Add 300ml of water, boiled to approximately 93 degrees Celsius.

-Allow to infuse for three to five mins.
