Should I Use Filtered Water in my Coffee Machines?

You should always use filtered water in your coffee machine, as it’s an important and often overlooked factor in the quality of espresso you produce. It can also be the difference between having your espresso machine for a few years and enjoying it for 10 years or more!

What Do Water Filters Do?

Water filters use an activated carbon filter to remove sediment, chlorine and also reduce the total hardness (TH) of the water. If these are not filtered out of the water, they can cause problems with your coffee machine quite quickly. Issues include blocked pipe fittings, scale build-up in the group head and boiler, inefficiencies in heating and performance, and much more.

These issues can result in some very costly repair bills, sometimes costing so much that it's not even worth repairing the espresso machine. In short, using unfiltered water in your coffee machine could drastically reduce the life of the machine, so having a good water filter installed and replacing the filter when necessary (usually every 12 months) is really important.

How to Filter Water for Your Coffee Machine

There are two ways of filtering water for your home coffee machine:

-The first way is to use a small in-tank filter. As the name suggests, it goes in the water tank and is attached to the water supply hose for your espresso machine. The advantage of this filter is that the water is filtered just before being pumped into the boiler of your espresso machine. A particular disadvantage of this is the size of the filter. As the filters are small, they do need to be replaced much more frequently depending on your use.

-The second way of filtering water is to use an under sink water filter (also known as a tap water filter). This type of filter consists of a pressure limiting valve, a filter head, a filter cartridge and an outlet tap as well as a few hoses. This is a more effective way of filtering water, as well as being more cost-effective. You can refill your water tank from the tap as well as use the tap for filtered drinking water.

Benefits of Using a Water Filter with Your Coffee Machine

-Removes coarse and fine particles (physical sediment) from water and purifies.

-Improves the overall drinking quality of the water.

-Reduces the Total Hardness, preventing the build-up of limescale and gypsum deposits.

-Optimises water for coffee production, allowing users to produce full-bodied and aromatic espresso, reducing the elements that negatively affect aroma and taste.
